creative writing (rising 7th-12th)
Are you good at making up stories, building worlds, and inventing characters? Do you enjoy writing, but sometimes find the 5-paragraph essay structure to be boring? Have you ever dreamed about writing your own novel someday? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this is the camp for you! During the week, we will learn several techniques for good fiction writing, including crafting dialogue, creating dynamic characters, building a setting, using words to paint a picture, and more. There will be time each day for you to work individually on your writing project, to meet one-on-one with Ms. Colville, and to workshop story ideas with your friends. By the end of the week, the goal is for you to have written your own original short story! Be sure to bring your imagination!
Instructor: Ms. Olivia Colville

july 1-5
debate camp (Rising 9th-12th)
Do you love having lively, intellectual discussions with your friends? Are you passionate about defending the truth? Debate camp will give you the opportunity to hone your rhetoric skills and to become a more articulate and persuasive speaker. You don’t have to be an expert debater to sign up. In fact, if you find public speaking intimidating or difficult, this could be the perfect opportunity for you to practice and become more confident. During the week, we will learn some basic debate procedures and techniques. You will be placed on a team and assigned to defend either the “pro” or the “con” side of a particular issue. Debate topics will include a range of philosophical, theological, and social questions. Keep in mind that you could be asked to argue a position that you don’t actually agree with! Throughout the week, your team will become very familiar with your topic (research materials will be provided). Each team will craft a series of persuasive arguments, as well as opening and closing statements; your team will also need to be prepared to provide an on-the-spot rebuttal of the other team’s arguments. On Friday afternoon, we will hold our formal debates, each team will be scored, and winners will be announced. Friends and family are invited to attend the final debates.
