E3s Return to Chelsea Academy: Exploration, Expedition & Enrichment

March 13, 2026
By Dr. Diarmuid Wheeler

Chelsea Academy recently wrapped up its beloved E3 experiences — two days of purposeful, teacher-led adventures spanning the Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School. These E3s are not mere activities to fill our schedule, they are living, breathing moments of transformation, where young hearts and minds are renewed in ways that textbooks alone could and will never achieve.

In an ever-changing and busy world, the return of E3s has been a deliberate act of restoring harmony and balance to our academic schedule and provide our students with time to wonder and reflect. As St. Paul so beautifully puts it in Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

  • Exploration invites students to discover new facets of God’s creation, awakening wonder at His handiwork, as Scripture declares: “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have established; what is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:3–4).
  • Expedition calls students to embrace challenge, teamwork, and perseverance, echoing the pilgrim spirit of faith: “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who set their hearts on pilgrimage” (Psalm 84:5).
  • Through enrichment, reflection (including prayer), and interdisciplinary depth transform experience into lasting insight, fostering virtue, stronger bonds, and a clearer sense of vocation.

Tapping into the distinctive talents and passions of our dedicated teachers, these tailored adventures take learning beyond the classroom walls, offering unhurried encounters with beauty, opportunities to live Catholic virtues in real situations, and a joyful break from routine that deepens personal faith and community. Students chose from a rich menu of teacher-led experiences:

  • Radio Astronomer for a Day — Mr. Foster
  • Explore Far East India — Dr. Shanahan
  • The Conservative Movement in America — Mr. Doak
  • Clothed in Beauty — Ms. Dugas
  • Charcuterie Workshop and Event Planning — Mrs. Klassen
  • Vintage & Vanilla — Mrs. Temple
  • Sportswriting and the 1-3-1 Essay — Mr. Thomas
  • An Adventure in Spelunking — Mr. Peppiatt & Mr. Gutierrez

At their heart, E3s are a reminder to us all of what true Catholic education is meant to be. Not merely about transmitting knowledge, but forming souls who can see God’s fingerprints in creation, in community, and in themselves. Our E3s do exactly that in inviting students to step into the adventure of becoming who God created them to be, the next generation of balanced, resilient saints, scholars, and servant leaders.
