November 7, 2008

Dear Friends of Chelsea Academy:

The months roll by and with them have come an abundance of blessings on our fledgling school.  Classes continue to challenge our students and foster their intellectual growth.  At the same time, our unique program of activities, sports, clubs, and special events rounds out our academic work.  Here is some of the news from Chelsea.

Perhaps the highlight of the semester so far was our Fall Hike.  After attending Mass at St. Peter Catholic Church, students, faculty, and several energetic parents hiked a seven-mile circuit in Shenandoah National Park.  We then enjoyed a cookout, a hay ride, songs around a bonfire, tug-of-war, egg tosses, three-legged races, and other games at the home of one of our families in Rappahannock.

Drama is proving to be a favorite club at Chelsea.  Last Saturday, more than half of our student body participated in a drama workshop led by Erin Steenson, a Christendom College graduate and professional actress working in the D.C. area.  Under the direction of Chelsea teacher Bernardine Clark, our students are now preparing original skits to be performed in December.

All of our students played on our soccer and volleyball teams this fall.  Led by Coach Noah Morey, the boys’ soccer team had an exciting season marked by good sportsmanship, team play, and a win over a much larger school in an action-packed game in Manassas.  Our girls, though beginners at volleyball, enjoyed building their skills on the court as they laid the foundation for a strong volleyball program.

Even with their challenging academic course loads, Chelsea students have embraced the wide-ranging extracurricular opportunities available to them with tremendous eagerness and energy.  They sing in the Choir, memorize poems in the Epic Poetry Group, organize Feast Day Celebrations, and participate in the Chess Club and the St. Adelard Farming Club.  Several students will soon begin studying Greek under the guidance of Chelsea parent Mark Clark.

This Sunday, November 9, we will host prospective students and families at our Open House from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.  We invite you to come and see Chelsea Academy for yourselves.

As always, thank you for your prayers and support.

Sincerely,

Jonathan D. Brand
